WORKSHOP: YOU CAN DO A GRAPHIC NOVEL

Barbara Slate, author of the acclaimed book, You Can Do a Graphic Novel, believes that everybody can do a graphic novel. It may not sell a million copies, but everybody can write a story and draw. The students create a character bible (name, age, biggest fear, goal in life, etc.) and start laying out panels using stick figures. Those who are advanced will get a critique of their work and be able to take their graphic novel to the next level. Whether it's a one day program, once a week for 4 weeks, or a semester, your students will be inspired!

TALK: MY LIFE IN COMICS

Having written over 300 comics and graphic novels, Barbara talks about her career in the fiercely male dominated super-spandexed world of comic books. As the writer of Barbie, Betty, Veronica, Angel Love, Pocahontas, and many more, she was able to get her own voice heard. Barbara's tale begins in the early 1970's with her creation of Ms. Liz, the first feminist greeting card, and continues to her graphic novel, Getting married and Other Mistakes.

An exhibition is available.
